Congratulations to Chun Wee, who won the Silver Award and Mike Gorrie HRM Award, specialising in Organisational Development and Psychology at the 72nd Joint Graduation in Absentia. Below is an account of the opportunities and experiences he has gained through the course. 

“As an Assistant Director in the Navy Branch at the Defence Psychology Department under MINDEF, I frequently advise on psychology-related initiatives and concerns for the organisation. I also collaborate with my colleagues to deliver products aimed at enhancing soldier performance and engagement. 

With a keen interest in people, I decided to delve deeper into this field. The course I took significantly increased my interest in understanding how individuals perform in the workplace and how implemented ideas and policies can help them maximise their potential in their assigned roles. This closely aligned with the topics covered in my course. 

One of the biggest challenges I faced was juggling both work obligations and classes, especially since I was on shift work during that period. It was quite a dilemma when classes and presentations clashed with my duty schedules. I am grateful to my supervisors for arranging alternate work duties, allowing me to attend my classes without much disruption. 

My fondest memories are the networking sessions with my course mates from different industries. We often shared stories and experiences, which strengthened our bond. During the last module, our lecturers joined one of these meetups for a sort of farewell/pre-graduation celebration, which warmed my heart. 

One key takeaway for me is the profound respect for every individual as a treasure trove of accumulated knowledge and experience. Having no prior knowledge of HR, I learned a great deal from my course mates' shared experiences, which provided valuable context to the lesson material and helped me better understand its practical applications.”
