“Diversity, Equity, Inclusion – Integrating a Cohesive Workplace Culture” – Where to Next?

We know that workplace culture stands to gain greatly from diversity, equity and inclusion and that organisations benefit in a multiplicity of ways when they take an active stance in inculcating these practices into their strategy and overall thinking. Indeed many organisations have made great strides in integrating such critical elements into their ways of working – and yet there is still more to do. There is a felt sense that while we have made progress in some areas we have still a long way to go in others. Some observers take the view that we may even be going backwards. Why?
In this opening session we will look at some of the tectonic shifts facing society today and the impact they are having on our ability to advance the agenda for diversity, equity and inclusion. There is growing interest in the “S” part of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance principles) and of ESG metrics for organisations as a whole. And as diversity, equity and inclusion sit squarely in the Social dimension of ESG, it is incumbent on us to address what needs to be done in the interest of all stakeholders – with employees at the heart of all this. So we will explore the issues of the day regarding diversity, equity and inclusion and ask: How far have we come, really? What more can and should we do? And how?

Michael Jenkins

Mr Michael Jenkins was born and spent his early years in Malaysia. He graduated from Durham University in Chinese followed by postgraduate studies in Japanese language, politics and economics at Nanzan University in Nagoya, after which he worked for Toyota Motor Corporation as an analyst. Returning to the UK in 1988, Michael worked at the University of Bath as Director of the Foreign Languages Centre. In 2001, he returned to Asia as Director of INSEAD Executive Education in Singapore and subsequently joined the CCL Asia Pacific as Managing Director. In 2009 Michael took on the role of CEO, Roffey Park Institute (UK). In July 2018 Michael joined the Human Capital Leadership Institute in Singapore and in 2020 set up his own company Expert Humans. The UK’s HR Magazine named Michael as one of the UK’s Most Influential Thinkers in HR in 2013 and 2016 and in 2020 Michael joined the UK-based FutureWork Forum as a Partner.

Mr Parag Arora is an accomplished executive with over 25 years of technology industry experience. His responsibilities have included setting up, transforming, accelerating and turning around businesses in the Asia-Pacific region.

In this current role based out of Singapore, Parag is the chief business executive for Citrix’s Cloud/SaaS workspace transformation solutions, multi cloud application delivery and access security portfolio, including Citrix SASE across Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) region. He is responsible for business strategy, performance and acts as an ambassador for key customers and partners.

Ms Rachel Ong is the Chief Executive of ROHEI, a learning and consulting partner with a team of over 50 full-time consultants, operating in Singapore and Shanghai. ROHEI’s consultancy focuses on 3 areas: building a culture of trust in organisations, developing trusted and relationally competent leaders, and navigating the people aspect of change management.
Since 2015, ROHEI has been recognised by the Great Place to Work Institute for 4 consecutive years as Top 5 Best Workplaces in Asia and Top 5 Best Workplaces in Singapore.
Rachel Ong is a Member of Parliament for the West Coast GRC and serves as the Adviser to the Telok Blangah Grassroots Organisations.

Mrs Sher-li Torrey is the founder & director of [email protected] (Singapore), which was started in 2010. Trained in various personality profiling tools, she has more than 20 years of corporate experience. Formerly heading the postgraduate team at the Office of Career Services at the Singapore Management University (SMU), she has held various roles in different industries.
As founder of Singapore’s first flexible work career portal, a subsidiary of [email protected], Career Navigators – with a focus on bringing women back into the workforce in full-time roles, Sher-li has spoken to various organisations and local media on Diversity & Inclusion topics, as well as HR-related issues. She is a frequent speaker and article contributor to press and TV on topics related to new work environment, employment trends and diversity hiring.

Alvin Goh

Executive Director
Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI)

Mr Alvin Goh is an accomplished international senior business manager with over 15 years of experience in the financial and consulting industry where he played key roles in various business and human capital transformation projects that has translated to net bottom line growth of USD100 million.
He was part of a task force that had to implement a comprehensive BCP during the SARS pandemic when he was working in Shanghai, China. He saw first-hand how badly it affected the livelihood and mental state of his staff and students.
Alvin firmly believes that a well thought out BCP should go beyond the protection of an organisation’s operations, systems, infrastructure, reputation and business assets and must include the well-being of its people.
