Outline

This online programme offers a flexible way for those who have successfully completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management (or equivalent) and are keen to ‘top-up’ their existing qualification with a masters research report within a relatively short time frame of 6 months while working to the highest academic standards.

The Master of Science in Human Resources (Top-Up) will enable you to develop a range of research skills and enhance your professional competence in undertaking applied research that is based on an HR-based topic of significance and that can be of benefit to both yourself and your employer or the organisation you will have selected to conduct your research. Being rooted in the key principles of action research, it will develop your capability to effectively bridge the knowledge-practice gap and conduct research in human resource management that is connected to real work issues and underpinned by a wide range of business data, research resources and methodologies. As such, it is well suited to practitioner-learners and mature part-time students with a post graduate diploma (or equivalent) who are in a position to play a leading role in the diagnosis of HR-related challenges and in generating potential solutions based on such diagnosis.

This particular research approach will lead to the completion of a 15,000 word practice-based masters dissertation that is both theoretically-grounded, critically-reflective and geared towards practical action.

It is important early on to highlight the key concerns informing our research approach, which include:

  • raising awareness of workplace opportunities for action research as applied to HR-related issues;
  • creating an understanding of the organisation as a learning environment, enhancing your research skills, capabilities, competencies and the value you can add to real work situations;
  • underlining the importance of Practice based learning (PBL) and Practice based investigation (PBI) in addressing HR-related issues in context;
  • demonstrating the benefits of critical analysis, reflection and evaluation; and
  • providing you with step by step guidance to the practice based investigation process.

The Edinburgh Napier University Business School is accredited by AACSB for excellence in teaching, research, curriculum development, and student learning; meaning that it is recognised as being among the top 6% of institutions offering Business degrees globally. Achieve your full potential with Edinburgh Napier University Business School.

Objectives

In light of the overall aim of this online programme is to develop your ability to integrate theory and practice and contribute to HR practice and business needs through the transfer of knowledge from your project into workplace practice with the following objectives:

  • To build upon professional knowledge and expertise of HRM gained through postgraduate diploma study and provide an opportunity (via the postgraduate management practice report) for further in-depth specialist knowledge of current developments in an area of HRM.

  • To develop practice based investigative skills to enable you to effectively diagnose HR-related work issues and make an enhanced contribution to strategic HRM and performance improvement within organisations.

  • To develop critical reflection and engagement with HRM theory to understand and where appropriate, challenge existing individual and organisational perspectives and practices.

  • To practice continuous personal/professional development, independent and reflective learning.

  • To develop intellectual capability and academic progression appropriate to Masters level.

Who Should Attend

HR Professional and support staff with an acceptable degree and working experience who aspire to enhance their educational level in the Human Resource Management function and understand the practical research work in the business organisation. 1. Research proposal: you are required to write a formal individual project proposal which will be used as a basis for your scoping study (20% weighting – 2,000 words).
  2. Scoping study: you will then have to submit a scoping study which will form part of the final practice-based masters’ dissertation (30% weighting – 7,000 words).
  3. Practice based Masters’ dissertation: your final submission builds on the scoping study to produce a practice-based Masters’ dissertation (50% weighting – 15,000 words).
